HAMILTON BROUGH COUNCIL.

Correspondence, _&c. The Mayor, iri explanation of a telegram forwarded to Mr Whitaker, said they would remember that the Government had some time ago appointed Mr T. MacfFarlane to arbitrate on the claim made by the Council against the Waipa County Council. An award was made, but it was afterwards discovered the appointment of the arbitrator was illegal, not having been made by' Order in Council.- Mr Whitaker had promised to' set the matter to rights. On the 24th June, he telegraphed from Wellington to say that Mr MacfFarlane had been re* appointed. He (the Mayor) had since communicated with Mr MacfFarlane, who stated that he had not received any intimation of his re-appointment. They, were now awaiting a reply to a communication addressed to Mr Yvhitaker. The Town Clerk of the Thames forwarded a sample of oxide of iron paint manufactured at the Thames for trial upon wood work in the Borough. The Clerk was ordered to acknowledge the receipt of same. A telegram was rend from the member for the district dated June 24 intimating that the Government were about to introduce a bill amending' the boundaries of the Borough of Hamilton. Mr J. Graham, Eelieving Officer, Auckland, wrote, in reference to a recent case of distress, asking that vouchers for the amount spent by the Council might bo filled in to be forwarded to Wellington with a view to making a refund. Mr F. A. Whitaker telogriiphed on the 11th inst stating that the' balance of the material for the Hamilton Railway Bridge was expected in a fortnight and that tenders would be called for the erection as soon at that period as possible. Mr R. Gwynno, trustee of the Hamilton Band, wrote intimating that the members had unanimously agreed to play on the day of Tawhiao's arrival in Hamilton. Several telegrams from Major Mair in reference to the movements of the Maori King were read, and a telegram was also received from the member for the district in answer to a query from the Council stating that the Defence Minister did not think it advisable for the Hamilton Cavalry Troop to be asked to turn out to assist at the ceremony of welcoming Tawhiao. Mr F. A. Whitaker also telegraphed, stating that the Government were providing food for the natives, leaving it to the settlers to provide any extra entertainment which they deemed advisable. The Borough woikman applied for an increase of pay on account of the laboiious nature of his dutiei. After several of the Councillors had spoken highly of the character of the services lendered by Mr Peacock, it was unanimously agreed to make an advance of one shilling per day in his wage. The Under Secretary for Public Works wrote stating that the Depaitment had no objection to allow the painting of the Hamilton traffic bridge to be deferred till the summer.

Reports. The Works Committee reported that the necessary repairs at Cox's hill and the station road bridge had been attended to. The culvert at the lower end of Grautham-stieet had boon damaged by the late rains, and the committee had j requnsted two bricklayers to tender for the icpairs that evening. The committee also recommended employing an additional workman during the winter months. The report was received and the action of the committee in calling for tenders was confirmed, the Mayor 'explaining that it was a matter which admitted of no delay, as the whole culvert might be washed away at a moment's notice unless attended to. The following tenders were then opened :—J. Steadman, £5 ; W. Edwards, C 5 10s. On the motion of Cr. Jones, it was agreed to accept the tender of Mr Steadman, provided he agreed to carry out the work according to specifications to be provided by Mr Vialou The Works Committee were authorised to employ au additional man on the roads during the winter. The Committee appointed to arrange re the banking account brought up a report, stating that the committee had received an offer from the Union Bank to allow an overdraft at Qh per cent on the personal security of the Council. The Bank of New Zealand had offered to take the account at current rates of interest. The committee therefore recommended that the Borough account be transferred to the Bank of New Zealand. The Council went into committee to consider the report, and after discussion resolved to recommend the removal of the account as already done by the subcommittee. On the Council resuming, it was resolved that a committee consisting of the Mayor, Crs. Hill, Vialou, and Sandes, wait upon the manager of the Bank of New Zealand to get definite terms. The Town Clerk reported that he had sold the ' leuse of certain of the Borough endowments on Saturday, and that the total .yearly income from such leiibes would amount to £17 9s 6d.

Exception of Tawhiao. Cr. Vialou moved " that the resblutions passed at the public meeting held on Friday, relative to Tawhino's reception be adopted." This was carried, and after a long discussion it was agreed that the Hum to bo expended on the occasion ehall not exceed £5. After the transaction of some , other business of a routine character the Council rose.
