CAMBRIDGE TOWN BOARD.
Annual Meeting of Ratepayers and Election of Trustees. The annual meeting of the Ratepayers of Cambridge was held at Town Board 1001ns on Wednesday night last, at 7 o'clock, and at the time appointed for the meeting the room was completely crowded, almost every ratepayer m Cambridge being present. .Sergeant-major Heaney, on the motion of j\lr J. IJ.1 J . Campbell, was voted to the j chair.
Annual Report. Mr Campbell, the chairman of the outgoing Boaid, read a somewhat lengthy lcport, dealing with finance, and setting forth geneial action and jjohey of the Board, and the v\uious works carried out under their huprietendence during the past twelve months. In regard to the Town Districts Bill, the report set foith what had been done by the Board towards getting the nicasui c passed. Their representative tin Parliament had telegraphed, in answer to the resolutions adopted at the late public meeting, that the bill would be re-inti cluced with every jDrospect 0 { \j e ing made law. No opportunity had been lost to advance the scheme for connecting Cambridge by rail with the main line. The Board had taken steps to obtain better post-office accommodation, and had succeeded, although the accommodation was still inadequate to the lequueincnts, and the Inulding itbelf unworthy of this comparatively populous district. Suppoited by the Resident Magistrate for ihe distnct. the Boaid had made strong re-pie-eutations to the (Government in regard to the unsuitable nature of the building used ab a Comt-housc, with the result that a building sufficient for their requirements had been fitted up. In these inatteis the Board desired to thank the member for the district (Mr J. B. VVhyte) foi his assiduous attention to their* interests In legal d to the pioposed deviations m Chapel- stieet, the following airtngemenfc between Messrs Hally and McNeish, and the Boaid would be submitted to thp meeting for confirmation. Ist. — Mr MoNeish has agreed to give 13 v 135 feet along the eastern side of lot 117 2nd. —Mr Hally lias agreed to give 13 x 375 feet along the eastern side of lot 117, and the same gentleman has also ■igieed to give 13 x 500 feet along the western side of lot 4 IS, thus making a, load 26 feet wide, for the following conMdcration.s : — (aJ The Board grant Mr Hally, oi his appointee, the use of that pait of Chapel-stieet lying between lots 4kS and 419, and iB2 and 583, for the term of 21 yeais at a nominal rent, (b) That the Boaid assist Mr Hally in obtaining the lease or freehold of No. 420. (c) That the Board pay all costs of necessary deeds for carrying this arrangement into effect. (j )) The consideration obtained by Mr McNeish being the advantage the proposed road will give him by enabling him to have access to his allotment from Queen stieet. — In conjunction with the Domain Board, the Board had been successful in getting the Government to lay down permanent survey standards for the convenience of the ratepayers. Of the contract works let by the Board the principal were the formation and gravelling of Lake and Victoria streets, at a cost of £H7 Ss 6d, and the formation of Duke-street west, which, now that the W. S. N. Co. had removed their wharf, was a very important thoroughfare. The Board had also laid down an additional drain along this street to relieve the main pipe. A number of footpaths had been gravelled. Owing to the wet weather little had been done in the direction of improving the old road to the wharf. Victoria street had been kerbed and channelled, which waa found to be a great improvement. Victoria-street had been planted with trees, presented by Major Wilson, all along the west and partly on the east side. Several owners of property adjoining had contributed towards the.dosft. The work of forming Queen-streeti niyft was now in progress. Regarding fche^oad between the bridges, the Cout%' Council had voted £150 towords the work which would have to be supplemented. The Board desired to thank Crs Wells and Kirkwood for having put the finances of the, County on a satisfactory footing, thereby insuring to the district its fair share of the County , revenue in the future. After referring to one or two other works, the report concluded with a hope that the labors of the Board had t?een for the public good, and with a tribute to the valuable services which. had been rendered by.,the Board's recretary, Mr J.
