THE ROMAN CATHOLIC PRESBYTERY.
TO THE EDITOR. SfR, — Permit me to reply on behalf of the Catholic Church Committee to a letter which appeared in your issue of Thursday, the 16th mst., with reference to the building of this Presbyteiy. We consider it our duty to exonerate the rev, gentleman mentioned in said letter from any censiue, Murphy may try to circulate in reference to his failing to carry out the contiact. The facts of the case are these : lie signed an agreement to find all nuteiial and labour, and to complete the building within two months from that datp, failing which to forfeit 40s per week until the building was complete, and gave Mr Campbells name as the gentleman who would supply the timber to him. On these conditions we accepted his tender, and the money matters rested entirely in the hands of the committee. The time for fulfilling the contract expired, and nothing was done by Murphy with the exception of a few days' work. Avhen the rev. gentleman whose name has been drawn into the matter generously offered to complete the building as a work of chaiity, receiving no recompense whatever tor his time and talent, except the gratoful thanks of the Catholic congregation of Hamilton, who are deeply indebted te him for his kindness. The Rev. Father Luck pleaded, in Murphy's favour that the committee should fettle with him by arbitration. We did so, and he refused to accept the amount that \\ c decided to give him. In conclusion, Mr Editor, I am surprised at you occupying the columns of your journal with an imaginary grievance such ab this. If there is any, the District Court is the proper place to decide the matter, and not the columns of a newspaper. — I am, &c,
Edward McGakrirlf, Hon. Sec, C. Church Committee. [We are sony that in vindicating the committee Mr McGarrigle should have gone out of his way to .give us a pece of advice, as impertinpnt as it is gratuitous. In future let us hope he will accord us tte privijedge of deciding 1 , uron .questions where we are the best julge. — El,] ;
