A BURIAL GROUND.
TO THE KDITOB. Sir,— As thia/town&nip is within the boundaries 1 of Eiako pounty, I presume that the Co'uucil belonging thereto have a' right to bestow a little of their i attention , on this place." We have grievances too numerous to mention, amongst the rest we have not got as yefc a burial ground, deaths have, I am sorry to Bay, occurred amongst us, our nearest place of interment is, I believe, Paroa, some 14 or 16 mjleß distant, and very few of the inhabitants of Morgantown or its vicinity • could afford the expense ' of taking their dead such a distance for buiiaL It is near time that our "county fathers" paid us more attention. They must remember that there will soon be an election pf County Councillors, and if they wish to be re-elected they must look after us better. Plenty of men can be got to run for the County stakes, and there nre a great many votes in this place. The miners will not be put off with vague promises that are like piecrusts made only to be broken. No help has been given to us in the shape of roads, to assist us in pros* peoting the district, and suoh roads (heaven save the mark) as we have, are,' after a few hours rain, more mud puddles. Now sir, we, although so far away from the cent re a of population, have quite a plethora of Ministers of religion. Surely our Council ought to try and give us some one who would minister to the wants of our bodies. We want a doctor resident say at Waihou, where he would be iv as near as possible, the centre of our large district. Crying pcccavi for taking up no much of your valuable space. — I am, &0.,
Taniwha.
Tats Pope, in an address to the Cardinals, has expressed regret .it the attacks and insults heaped upon the Church. Therefore, an cxtroadinary Chunjh day will be inaugurated throughout Christendom, for the- purpose of imploring the Almighty. M. Bk Lesseps counts on Italian labourers to dig the Panama Canal. They bored the Mount Cenia and Gothard tunnels, and are Considered the moat steady, frugal, and intelligent in such undertakings. Marrying to avoid being Mabried. — Mary Granville, in her " Memoirs," tells this story of the good old times : A lady came into Birmingham with a handsome equipage, and " desired the landlord of the inn to get her a husband, being determined to marry somebody or other before she left the town." The man bowed, and supposed her ladyship to be in a facetious humour, but being made sensible how much she was in earnest, he went out in Bearch of a man that would marry a fine lady without asking questions ! ' After many repulses from poor fellows who were not desperate euough for such a venture, he met with an exciseman, who said he " could not be in a Worse condition than he was," and accordingly went with the innkeeper, and made a tender of himself, which was all he had t« bestow on the lady, who immediately went with him to one who gave them a license, and made them man and wife, on which the bride gave her spouse two hundred pounds, and without more delay left the town and the bridegroom to find out who she was or unriddle this strange adventure. Soon after she was gone, two gentlemen came into the town in full pursuit of her ; they had traced her so far along the road, and finding the inn where she had put up, they examined into all the particulars of her conduct, and on hearing she was married gave ov6r their pursuit and returned baok. 'Tis supposed the young lady in a desperate fit, for fear of being married where she did not like, ohose this unaccountable way of preventing it.
