THE MEMBER FOR WAIPA, AND OUR LAND LAWS.

to the editorSir. — Among the various topics touched upon by Mr Whitakei* in his address to the electors at Hamilton, the land question was conspicuously absent. There are few thinking men but will agree with me that this momentous question — one that at this present moment has thrown one section of the Home country into convulsions and agitates all Europe— ia of equal importance to us in a new country like this, nay greater, for upon our action in the matter now, depends not alone our own welfare, but that of our children after us. In fact, as we now how, po shall future genarations reap. When Mr Whitaker addiesscd the electors of Te Awamutu during- his candidature in September, 1879,1 pat the following question to him : "Do you approve of a aystem (of land laws), under which a man may acquire large blocks of native land for speculative purposes ?" His reply to which was, "No, certainly not; and if elected will do all in my power to do away with it." Now, had Mr Whitaker ia his speech, alluded to the land question, perhaps we might have hoard how he reconciles profession with practice, re Patotere for example. — I am, &c, Wm. Johns. Te Awamutu, June 15, 1881.
