TE AROHA. (FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.)

The results of the crushing of the quartz from the Smile of Fortune claim ate not very satisfactory, only 3dwts having been produced from 5 loads, but it is said that the stuff now being got out is of far superior quality, both in this and the Morning Star claims. Another child died yesterday of the prevailing sickness, and the want of a medical man is felt greatly. The river has risen considerably in consequence of the heavy rain, and as we have no boat in Te Aroha, the sinking of the punt on Monday was a severe calamity. It has been raining and blowing fiercely here, almost without intermission since last Wednesday night. The gale was particularly violent, and did a number of amall damage* to chimneys, out-buildings, tents, &c, but there was nothing worth reporting. The commotion has ceased at last, and with tho exception of the general sloppiness we are none the worse, and have some pure water and greater purity of air to be thankful for. v» The scarlatina is still hanging about ; one death having occurred yesterday, and a fresh case being reported. There is nothing fresh of any importance to rentark with reference to the goldfield- % ■ < The Waikato claim is to send down some stuff to the battery, and others are about to make a fresh trial. .' The Smile of Fortune, which, with the Morning Star, was to deliver 40 tons, is still being carefully and somewhat slowly battered, but there are no results yet to report; the whole process not having been completed. The Smile of Fortune may be expected to turn out much like the Morning Star ; the two being situated near together, and probably on the same reef, and worked by the same manager. Whether the high expectations enter-

' f tamed of this claim, as well as of the Morning Star, are destined to be realised, remains to be proved. Another, of our well-known characters, Voi ct prectcred tiihil — our Stentor — the man of the mighty mouth and bell — is going. The people of the place tickled the departing hero of the bell gracefully and whispered sweet farewells to him that has vended the papers of New Zoaland so uproariously. Mr. Gorrish, who was much affected as usual, endeavoured to be eloquent, but finding hid feelings in his liquor stronger than his eloquence, he wisely deferred the oratory to a more favourable opportunity. This morning he is gracefully ringing himself out with great emotion, " Bing out wild bell to the wild sky, and ring the newer bellman in." It is passing etrange, the effect of a bit of dirty paper with several eignatures scrawled upon it, upon a middle-aged man of limited ideas and unlimited conceit, Napoleon in all his glory or the ineffable old Louis Quatorzo — parading the terraces at Versailles was never greater than this good old man is in his own ohtimation at tho present month. —(June 8).
