The rumored intention to release more native prisoners is not confirmed. It is not yet definitely decided by the Government, but probably a laige batch will be liberated in a few days. A deputation waited on the Colonial Secretary for a grant of pound for pound towards erecting a building as a home for friendless women, for which £150 had been already raised by public subscriptions. Mr Dick raised the point as to whether under the existing law a benevolent grant could be given for building purposes. He promised to consult the law officers on the point.

The brigade quickly arrived at the fire and extinguished it. The damage is estimated at £100 The four houses were insured for .£2OO in the Royal office. The police have arrested a man named John Brown, alias Henry Duncan, who was seen about when the fire broke out. Richardson has been committed for trial on the charge of attempting suicide by strychnine.
