WAIKATO CALICO BALL.
The invitation calico ball in honor of the Queen's Birthday came off in the Oddfellows' Hall, Hamilton East. The stewards, and more especially the honorary secretary (Mr J. A. Allen), were untiring in their exertions to make the ball a success, and it must form a very pleasing reflection to know that they succeeded. The ball was, indeed, one of the, if not the most enjoyable which has ever taken place in Waikato. The novelty of the costumes contributed in a great measure to bring about this result, added to the other necessary features, good music and a good floor. The hall was becomingly, and not too ornately decorated with bunting, streamers, sword and bayonet stars, etc., a prettily executed motto, "God Save tub Queen," adorning the proscenium. Evergreens, the usual adjuncts to a ballroom, were conspicuous by their absence. The music was supplied by Messr3 McComish (cornet), Herapath (violin), and Triphook (piano), all of Auckland, and gave universal satisfaction, the taste displayed in the selection of the tunes being commented on in favorable terms. The supper was provided by Mr T. Trewheellar, of Hamilton, the arrangements in this department giving complete satisfaction. Mr W. Buck ably superintended at the refreshment bar. The dresses, many of them of most gorgeous type, were the subject, naturally, of general remark, surprise being expressed that such a display could be made in a country district. To point out the best were an invidious task, and it will be sufficient to remark here that considerable taste as well as talent was displayed in their selection. The ladies especially are to be commended for the elegance of their costumes. Dancing commenced at 9 o'clock, and was kept up with spirit till nearly 4 o'clock yesterday morning. The duties of Master of the Ceremonies were ably performed by Colonel Lyon, assisted by Messrs C. Johnson and W. Tonks.
