Wellington, Tuesday. The clay was fine but bleak. No race or public amusements took place. Nearly everybody went out of town. A general holiday was observed. Mr D. Atkinson's specimens of Tara-naki-made Portland cement in vaiions btasres of manufacture and use excite considerable attention in the Industrial Exhibition. The Wellington Rifle Association Champion Belt was won by Lieutenant Tait, of the Engineers.

Hokitika, Tnesday. Messrs Blake and party, who have been for some time assisted by the Prospecting Association, announce the discovery ot payable grounds in the Arihura district.

Christchurch, Tuesday. A fire last mght destroyed «iti eightroomed empty house ou the North-east Belt, near the English cemetery, the house was the property of Mr Stoddart Lincolon. It is not known whether it is insured or not. Mr B. G. Wright received a vote of confidence at Ashburton last night. This axitumn has been a phenomenon, and its influence on the health of people is most marked. Erery oilier person is suffering from influenza, colds, and coughs, and jt is said that in one or two places diptheria is prevalent.

Dunedin, Tuesday. The Roslyn Tramway Oompauy, by 1728 to 1047, refused to allow a car to be run on Sundays. A train containing 1 40 passengers, ran off the south line to-day at the crossing, half a-mile out of the main station. Several passengers were brui-^ed a little, but otherwise no damage was done except the delay to the traffic.
