PRESENTATION TO MR SYLVESTER M'GUIRE.
Yestebday Mr Sylvester McGuire ran his last coach, from Te Aroba to Hamilton, having cold out to Mr,W. X.. Carter. During the time Mr McGuire has been on the road he has earned the goodwill and respect of everybody, not only at the Te Aroha and W.iikato ends, but of every settler along the line of route, to whom the genial old Jehu has always actesin his never- varying spirit of good nature and kindliness! When it became known that lie was about'to relinquish the Ardha coach traffic, the numerous friends which he had made on , the goldfield and the neighborhood'' determined that lie 'should not leave them without some tangible expression of the goodwill they bear towards him, and accordingly Mr H. A". Whitaker and a few -other prominent residents drew up a suitable address, which was quickly -signed by nearly 70 of the residents', who were eager' by so doing to add their testimony to the good opiriidn which is universally entertained of Mr McGuire. Tne presentation iof ■ the address^ which w.is accimprinied by a pui'se of soveieignu, two meerschaum pipes and ji tobacco pouch, was made yesterday morning just before the depiirture of the coach, by Mr Craig, auctioneer, who, in a few well chosen remarks, referred to the esteem in which the recipient had always been held amongst the. people of Te Aroha, and trave expression to the regret which? they felt at his departure. He read the address as follows : — Te Aroha, May 23rd, 1881. To Mr Syh'cstcr McGuire, cojeh proprietor. We, the following inhabitants of Te Aroha Goldfirld District, are desirous, on the eve of youi departure from amongst us for fresh, fields, to convey to you our deep regret at losing one so cuit .md obliging 1 , and one' who on every possible occasion has done everything possible to assist .1 tnend in need, never losing an opportunity of advancing the interests of the district, and by kind-heartedness, civility, and careful attention to business, has won the esteem and respect of all. Wishing) you and 1 your family a. long life and a hippy one,— We remain, yours truly, H. Whitaker, 1 'John Wood, G. S. O'Halloian, John Moor. P. Qinnlan, George Lipsey, Edwin Alisscn, John Hullock, I'hos. Rowe, John Allwood, and sixty others. Mr .Vlf-Gruire, who was much affected, said lip felt their kindness very deeply. Ho could not find words in which to express his gratitude, which was nevertheless stron sr and unaffected. A very large number of the residents were present and accompanied McG-uire fco the punt where they gave three hearty cheprs as the oo.ich drove away. At Wiihou another deputation waited on Mr McGuire, and presented him with a pur>e of money as a mark of appreciation of his services from the inhabitants of the district. Further presents were al-so made to Mr MoGuit'e <it Morrirnville by Mrs Brown, of the Nottingham Castle Hotel — aB well as numerous other exprei^ioas of regard ttom Air Collins, Manager of the Waitoa E tate and ot'<iers. Mr McGuire requests ua publicly to convey bis heartfelt thanks to hie many friends at Te Aroha and Piako whose kiudnesss he will never forget.
