The catastrophe is so great that one is led to ask, was it not possible to have averted it ? This question may never be satisfactorily answered ; at all events, it will not be answered until a full inquiry has thrown light upon all the circumstances suiTOunding it. The captain has been blamed for having, in such a locality hugged the shore too closely ; and the Union Company, for having entrusted to him such an important charge. Some wonder why the boats were not made to do better service, and others why a steamer was not sent to the rescue in time to have saved those who clung to the wreck till it disappeared. These and other matters connected with the occurrence cannot be understood unless by the light of more knowledge than we have up to the present titne acquired,
