New Plymouth, Tuesday. In the Supreme Court, Wilkinson, , charged with embezzling moneys belonging to the Government at Hatvera, was again arrainged on a second charge, and the trial lasted the whole day. At about 9 o'clock last evening the jury retired, and after 20 minutes' consideration returned with a verdict of guilty, but recommended the prisoner to mercy, on the ground that the Government were principally to blame for appointing a man like the prisoner, who appeared to have no knowledge of accounts, with a small salary, as receiver of revenue, when such a large amount as over £26,000 had to pass through his hands. Judge Richmond sentenced the prisoner to five years' penal servitude. At the Supreme Court, Thos. Brennan, oharged with stealing a silver watch and chain from E. J. Blake, Normanby, on the 26th December, was found guilty, and sentenced to 18 months imprisonment. John O'Sha'ughnessv, for stealing ahorse, the property of James Hausen, Kakararaea, w.va next arraigned. The case is now going on. There is another case, Kakaroa, for sheep stoaling, which will be brought on to-night as Judge Richmond wishes to proceed with the eteamer to-morrow, if possible.

Nelson, Tuesday. Mr. Acton Adamc, M. H.R., who has been seriously ill for some time, notifies his resignation of seat.

Christchurch, Tuesday. A man named Foley was killed by a fall of gravel in a pit afc Springston yesterday afternoon.

Dunedin, Tuesday. , The Coroner's jury on the late tram--' way accident returned a verdict of man* •daughter against the conductor, who has been committed for trial. Bail is allowed himself in £100 and two sureties of £50 each. The conductor (Hannah) is raid to have turned the brake the wrong way.
