THE ATTEMPTED ROBBERY OF THE NATIONAL BANK, TA URANGA. [BY ELECTRIC TELEGRAPH.] (FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.) The Prisoner in Court. Tauranga, Yesterday.
The case against Barfiekl, for attempted robbery at the National Bank, came on for hearing at 10 o'clock, and is still proceeding. Mr Moms, the bank manager, and Sergeant White and Constable Wheelan have been examined. Constable Wheelan states that after being cautioned, the prisoner said "Poverty drove me to this ; it was money I wanted ; it was not much, only £50 or £60." Nothing new beyond this has yet been brought out, and it is not positively known that the prisoner had any accomplices. The affair has produced considerable excitement here, and the Court was crowded all day.
