A Steamer Missing. Melbourne, Friday.
The Chinese Question. Sydney, Friday.
The captain and owner of the steamer India, alias Ferret, seized by the Customs for sailing under false register, is missing. 'Die crew have abandoned the vessel. They assert that they weie threatened and forced to silence by the captain. They were engaged at Cardiff for three years, and went to the Brazills for a cargo of coffee, which was sold at the Cape for £15,000. The name ot the vessel was twice changed. From the Cape she proceeded to A 4 auritus, and from there to this port, where the captain endeavoured to sell the vessel. It was proved that her papers were forged.
At a crowded and influential meeting to discuss the present influx of Chinese, it was resolved to send a deputation to the Government to urge the necessity for repressive measures against the Chinese emigration.
