Narrow Escape of the Duke of Manchester.
Wellington, Last Night, The Duke of Manchester and party, which included the Premier, had a narrow escape in passing through the Forty Mile Bush. About 80 miles from Wellington the bush was on fire on both sides of the road, and just after the Ducal party passed, an enormous burning tree fell across the road completely blocking it up. The Governor did not leave Auckland by the Hinemoa after all; changing his plans at the last moment. He will meet Lady Gordon at ker entrance to Wellington Harbour.
Tauranga, Last Night. The County Council resolved at a meeting, held to-day, to proceed against absentees for rates, and if necessary, to sell the land so as to recover the amounts due.
