Auckland, Last Night. Censuring the Government.
The Acclimatisation Society held a special meeting to-day to consider a letter from the Government, announcing that, in accordance with a request from the Bay of Plenty County Councils, pheasants had been exempted from being shot throughout the provincial district. Considerable surprise was expressed that Government should have taken this course, contrary to the advice of the Society, and it was contended by members that farmers would poison the birds if the Government proposal were carried out. The following resolution was passed :—: — " That in the opinion of this Council, any measures for the protection of pheasants or other game should come from farmers or settlers through the ( ounty Council of the district where protection is required ; and that the Council deprecates the action of the Government in protecting hen pheasants in the provincial district of Auckland, excepting in Whakatane and Tauranga Counties for the coining season, in opposition to the expressed desire of the Council." The Chinese residents of the city are greatly excited regarding the mysterious di&appearance of one of their countrymen, who has not been seen for some time. They fear he has made away with himself. Arrived— Loch Dee, from London.
