Auckland Racing Club Autumn Meeting.

,The rain which fell during Sunday night greatly improved the course, and Monday morning broke fine with the promise of a Bunshinny day, but before the bell rung for the first race a most uncomfortable raiu commenced to fall. There was good entries, good handicaps, and good acceptances. The threatened state of the weather kept many from •attending the races, still there was a good attendance and the grand stand was fairly patronised by the ladies. The bookmakers were in good force, and the greatest order prevailed. Impey's City Band, which was stationed in a paddock, played a number of selections during the day. Taking the racing as a whole it was excellent. For the Tradesman's Plate a "field of seven started, with the betting slightly in favour of Maid of Honour, The favourite won, but Ratcatcher, an outsider, made a close race of it. The Ellerslie Handicap resulted in a comparatively easy victory for Sir George, for which he started first favourite. The start was a wretched affair, and the race a poor criterion in consequence. Ihe Hurdle Race was a most interesting I event; three were in it all the way, and raced to the finish, which was a very close one. The big event, the Easter Handicap was a complete boil over. It was looked to as a match between Foul Play and Sir George, but King Quail showed his breeding and staying powers, and landed the stake to his owner's credit. Rawenata made a most creditable show in this race, and Ariel made a grand effort, notwithstanding many disadvantages. For the ] Novel Handicap three started, and Mr Milk's Diver was backed against the field, but he was beaten by McGee's Skylark. The Publican's Purse was a j match between Foul Play and Maid of Honour, and resulted in a comparatively easy victory for the former. At the back of the cour-e Paramena took front position with Maid of Honour in closo company, and Ratcatcher a length behind. The leaders came together through the cutting, after which Ratcatcher came up with a grand effort, and a splendid raco through the otraight took place. TUESDAY. The weather was dark and gloomy and the attendance somewhat smaller. The following are the results :—: — Flying Stakes of oOsovs. Sir George 1 Maid of Honor 2 Hippocampus ... ... 3 Betting 2tol on Sir George. The race was won easily by half-a-length. Handicap Steeplechase of lOOsovs. Sportsman ... ... 1 Whakahihi 2 Lone Hand and Rawenata also ran. Betting 6to 4 against Sportsman. Lone Hand led over the donble hurdles five lengths in front of Rawenata, the others following in a cluster over the stone wall, Sportsman in a moderate position. So they went to the water jump, but when the horeea came into sight Sportsman was leading up the hill, with Lone Hand second. Lone Hand baulked at the jump here, but was quickly brought to again, Sportsman pursuing a leisurely way and refusing nothing. At the jump at the top of the hill Lone Hand permanently stuck, and could not be persuaded to negotiate it. All the others were hard and fast at the fence lower down. At length Whakahihi was persuaded over, and came in persuit of Sportsman, a mile separating them, as the Waikato horse passed the stand. He went in good style after this, but could not approach Sportsman, who pursued the even tenor of his way without let or hindrance, and on the second round passed the ruck on the top of the hill. Here Lone Hand was at length forced over the impediment, and came in chase. Whakahihi followed up, and took second place. His owner lodged a protest against Sportsman, which, after a most careful investigation by the stewards, was disallowed. Sportsman proved himself the honest hor«e he is reputed to be and never refused once.
