WAIKATO COUNTY COUNCIL.

A meeting of the Waikato County Council was held yesterday. Present — Captain Steele (chairman), Councillors Primrose, -Wells, and Cumming. - The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed, and correspondence, outwards and inwards, was read over by the Secretary. Or. Wells informed the Council that he had interviewed Superintendent Thompson in reference to the Dog Act, and that he had promised to instruct the police throughout, the District to enforce provisions of same, but he (Cr, Wells) had learnt from Constable Brennan, of Cambridge, that as yet no instructions had reached him from official quarters. The Clerk also informed the Council that he had made similar enquiries of Sergeant McGovern, who had heard nothing on the subject. The Council requested the Clerk to write to Superintendent Thompson on the matter, and ask him to make an official notification to the police forthwith. A license was granted to Hugh Fergusson to slaughter cattle on his own farm. The circular from the Manawatu County Council was brought forward, when it was decided tli*ifc it would take too long to consider. The Chairman suggested, which was afterwards confirmed by the Council, that as the questions involved were matters of very great and general importance, that this Council should convene a meeting for Monday, 25th April, at 11 o'clock, inviting all the local bodies to be present or represented, and thereat to discuss the clauses of the circular, and forward the resolutions arrived at to the Chairman of the Manawatu County Council, in time for the general meeting of delegates referred to in another portion of the circular, to be held early next month. Mr Booth's tender was accepted for the land span at Hinton's Gully (£l9), and additional for sill and straps, £1 18s 6d ; also £17 for the earthworks, the contract to be completed by May 31st. Some little discussion then took place in refetence to the returns called for by Cr. Wells, showing the relative position financially of the different ridings, but owing to the system of keeping the accounts the returns called for did not of course talley with the general account. The Clerk explained that the returns were simply compiled from the general account for the last two years, and in order to arrive at what Cr. Wells wished, it would be necessary to go back to the first, and even then a difficulty presented itself, as special grants had been received and special works carried out, which had been carried through the general accounts o? the Council. The Clerk said it would be simple enough to keep separate accounts for the different ridings, but it would be necessary for the Council to apportion to the ridings the present monies to the credit of the County Fund. Three or four small accounts were passed for payment, which concluded the meeting.
