MAJOR ATKINSON BEFORE HIS CONSTITUENTS [BY TELEGRAPH. — PRESS ASSOCIATION. ] NEW PLYMOUTH, TUESDAY.
Major Atkinson addressed his con* stituents at New Plymouth this evening. After he had concluded his address the following resolution: was;prpposecl by Mr W. K. Hulke :— "/That this meeting, whilst'ifr-hasy •Tevwrjr-'confideownm -4he present -.Government, cannot but express ! its regret at the resignation o£the Hon. .Johpt-.JBryqe. as .Native, -who during his term of office commanded' the respect of both Europeans L and natives ; and, this meeting, recognising the necessity' of direct taxation fa oupplemett^a deficit in the revenue,' trust* that the 60j vernment will soon be able to" reduce it, and place such direct .taxation at may hereafter ■be : found necessary- on a more equitable basis than that of the present property .tax." An amendment of. thanks ana confidence was moved by Mr Oliver Samuel, and carried almost unanimously. The speech was practically the same as that a digest' of which was telegraphed from Patea. ■ Speaking in answer to Mr Waterhouse with reference to the contrast of New Zealand's income with that of England and [France, .Major Atkinson asserted the. correctness of his own con-^ tention,' and quoted McCullougli as hit authority.
