SPORTING.

Cricket.— Waikato v. Waipa.

The annual County match between Waikato and Waipa came off on the ground of the Cambridge Cricket Club on Saturday. From a variety of causes, very little interest has been taken in the affair, an indication of which may be found in the circumstance that Waikato had to play with nine, and Waipa with ten men. The Waikato team was captained by Wood, and their opponents by Tonks. The ground, probably owing to the long spell of dry weather, was not in the best order, and in consequence there was nothing m the play which calls for special comment. The bowling m particular was below the average, in proof of which it may be mentioned that only one of Waikato's wickets was clean bowled. In this respect Waikato was certainly better off than Waipa; but generally speaking, our remark above will hold good. Of the batting, little need be said. Fitzpatrick, for Waikato, and Sheath, for Waipa, were the only players who at all distinguished themselves with the willow, the former making 25 in the first innings, and the latter 29 in the second innings. From the scores given below, it will be seen that Waipa won the match by four wickets :—: —
