LAST NIGHT'S NEWS. [BY ELECTEIO TELEGRAPH.] (FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.)
Auckland, Last Night. The Public Works staff here this morning presented Mr James Stewart, District Engineer, with a handsomely-illuminated farewell address, on his retirement from the service. Mr Stewarts notice expiring in February, to-day was the last day on which he will be connected with the Public Works Department. Mr Hales, who succeeds him, left Wellington yesterday, where he occupied the position of Besident Engineer. The Thames Gas Company declared a dividend of Is 6d. The City of Sydney, with the inward mails, left San Francisco on the 14th of January. Jas. Fergusson, of Kohekohe, Waiuku, dropped dead oft his chair yesterday afternoon, at 3 o'clock. He was seen by neighbours fifteen minutes previously, outside his house. An inquest takes place to-morrow.
