KIHIKIHI.
OtJR township is at last assuming a businesvliko air. Commercial men and tradespeople aie beginning to le-ilizo its importance, both piesent and prospective. Two new houses have tnis week raised their stately fionts in Lyon-strcet. The marked increase and bustle visible amongst blacksmiths, wheelwrights,, and the saddlery dcpnitment is an indication of industry, and the sure advance of agricultural mattcis in thet-e parts. A considerable area of land has been put under turnips in the neighbourhood this season, fanneiw generally, especially tho>-o who have sown late, complain of the backwaid htate of the crops. Some fields have not yet shown vp, others again, where p slight .shower has caused the young tops to break the surface, aie vithmng up and disappcaung altogether. Ttiut part of Mr McMinn's letter of the 19th ultimo, respecting .school committees and the po-ition in thu body politic the teacher hhould occupy, is ju->t and reasonable ; verily, the role of a schoolmaster is a sufficiently difficult and arduous one, und the frame of mind of those who fill it Bhould somewhat approach the angelic co as to enable them patiently to bear the calumnies for which they are frequently a mark. Ap)up<>s of school committees, we have a few luminaiiesheio, facetiously termed the Kihikihi Di-trict H> hool Committee, which, taken as a body, poems a Bathe on our educational nj.stcm. I have to apologi.se to yo.-.r readers for giving them undue piominenco in my letter ot last week; the unfortunate chaitrr.an worried out of hi- life had hinco to place himself in quarantine. To meJdle with them, as a body, is akin to touching that which deh'leth. As fiuthor showing their calibre, I may mention that a paper has just been signed by houpoholder.s and parent*, rcpicsenting sixty out of tho pixty-fivc children attending the school, for transmission to the Board of Education, setting forth their value in its trno light.— [Own' Conespondent, Feb. 22, 1880.]
