TE AROHA.

[FROM OUR OWN' CORRESPONDENT. ] The prisoner ProcofFy was brought before the Bench at the Thames on Monday last, when the police applied for an adjournment till Thursday, winch was granted. Considerable speculation has been excited as to the l'eason of the delay. A. number of witnesses here were prepared to go to the Thames last Saturday, but early on that morning a special messenger arrived, stating that the case would be remanded. All the witnesses, with Detective Farrell, left here on Tuesday morning, and Mr Inspector Thompson, who is here in connection with the case, leaves to-day. Opinions here are pretty evenly divided as to the guilt or innocence of the accused, and the progress of the case will be anxiously watched by both the Native and Euiopean population. On Tuesday evening, about 10 o'clock, an alarm of fire was given, and, on turning out, it was found to be the raupo whare lately inhabited by the prisoner ProcofFy and his mate. As no one was living in it at the time, the cause of the fire is somewhat of a mystery, but the general impre&sion is that the hisrli wind bio, /ing at the time, must have carried some '■parks into the raupo, which beiup- very diy easily ignited. There is nothing to leport in connection with the Mines. A t-mall portion of the material for the Bitteiy has arrived, and the balance, about sixty tons, ia expectpd daily. The annual meeting of the Te Aroha No. 1 South G. M. Company, was held <in Monday pveninir last, in 0 Halloran's Hotel. MrH. E Whitaker. chairman of Directors, occupied the chair, and stated that from some unexplained cause, the report of the position of the Company which Mr F. A. White, the Legal Manager, had promised to i-end up, had not come to hand but as soon a« it did, it would be open fivr the inspection of the Shareholders at hi-> office. He al-o had prreat pleasure, jn expressing the satisfaction of the Diieotor-, with their Mine Manager, Mr T. G ( vin. The mine had been vsry ably worked, and though nor, yet on srold. the indication were so aiti factory that they had eveiy re.son to hope they would soon be. Two of the Directors retirp, the Chairman, who was eligihle, and offered himself for re-nlectiou, and Mr Xicoll who retired through not possessing the necessary qualification. r H. E. Whitaker was unanimously re-elected and on ! the proposition of Mr ftiley, seconded by Mr Moore, Mr L Jackson was elected to fill the other vasaucy. Mr Riley moved that the Directors be empowered to sell the reserve shares, 3000 in number, should a favorable opportunity offer. Seconded j by Mr Home and carried. A meeting of the Directors wa3 held immediately afterwards, at which it was resolved to make a call of sixpence per share, those who had paid the preliminary call of threepence, to be credited with the amount of this call. , As many of your readers may have business at the Warden's office here, it may save them some trouble to know the office is closed till Tuesday, Ist .March, after 'which it will onlj be open from Tuesday' to Friday in" each alternate ■week. 1 Applications of importance can be sent to the Warden at the Thames.
