TO THE EDITOR. THE ALLEGED BREACH OF THE BOROUGH BY-LAWS.

Sir, — Will you to good enough to grant me space in your columns, for the purpose of correcting au untruthful and one-sided statement 'which appeared in the Wailcato District News, in the Auckland Hei'ald of the 3rd inst., which maVes it appear as though I had committed a breach of the Malicious Damages to Property Act, by breaking open the gate on the Hamilton bridge. The correspondent of the Herald states that the tollkeeper was awakened by the sound of a conveyance driving up to the gate, and turned out as quickly as possible ; that he heaid a voice exclaimiug, <( Lift the gate at the bottom give it a sharp wrench and the lock will break; and that the wholo occurrence only occupied the space of a minute. The true f <icts of the case are as folio ws : — On the ai rival of Mr Paton and myself at the Toll-gate, I called loudly to the toll-lcceper thrpe times, and Mr Paton throe or four times, but there was no response. Aftpr waiting for about two minutes, Mr Paton asked me to open the prate, and the .statement in the Herald, to the effect that a voice was heard exclaiming " lift the gate at the bottom, &c, is utfeily false. I merely pulled the gate, with the object of trying if it weie open, and the lock gave way at once. — Yours, &c, C, E. Pearson.

A c vkd sharper was arrested on the Toke Farmers' Club (Show grounds lately, for cheating at certain card games Three days' imprisonment was all the punishment he received. In Dunedin a man on a similar charge received a month m gaol. The Mormon Church, at Salt Lake City has ju&t excommunicated six of Brigham Young's daughters. They were plaintiffs in the recent suit against the Church and the executors of Brigham "s estate, which put Delegate Cannon and others in gaol for the contempt.
