CAMBRIDGE PUBLIC LIBRARY AND READING-ROOM.

The annual general meeting of the members was held at the reading-room on Monday evening. Mr A. Heaney was in the chair, and read the report and balancesheet, as follows, which were unanimously adopted : — Report or the Cambridge Tubuc Library Committee for the Year 1880. The Committee have much pleasute in reporting that the Library has been steadily progressing during the past > ear. The number of subscribers has been 185, and the amount of subscriptions receiv ed £59 14s 7d, being an increase of £16 on the previous year. Three hundred and fitty new volumes have been added, and there are now 950 volumes in the Library. Your Committee have also again thankfully to acknowledge donations I of books, and magazines from Minor prummond Hay, to the value 'of £4 ioi> ; and now that the Government grant lifts c^asedj the , Committee trus.l that other gentlemen wUUtollow Major Hay's example. Your Committee have also to report that the Library' and Librarian's room have been lined and ceiled, and two new book cases fitted up, at; the coit of the material, Col. Lyon having kindly permitted 'two of_ his men to do the work, and for which thu Committee hereby express, their thanks, Th,e put-goiog Committee have much satisfaction in handing over to their sui.cess.ori a well-stocked Ltbrary in good working order, tree of debt, and a small surplus in hand.

The following managing committee were voted for the ensuing year: — Rev. Mr Willis, Messrs Heaney, Hewitt, Sargent, and J. J. Smith. Messrs Hally and Scott were appointed auditors. Mr T. Hicks proposed, and the Rev. Mr Willis seconded, a vote of thanks to the out-going committee; and Mr T. Wells spoke in very praiseworthy terms of the secretary. At the close of the general meeting, the committee met, when Mr A. Heaaey was again elected chairman.
