TE RORE BRIDGE.
TO THE EDITOB. Sir, — I am glad of the explanation re the " proper site" given in your "local" of the 22nd inst. , as lam thus enabled to correct a misapprehension which has arisen in your mind. I did not mean to imply that any change of opinion had come about in the minds of the settlers as to -which was the proper site, for the simple reason that a considerable number on both sides of the river always did think that the lower was the best. " As for the meeting, at which you have been informed a unanimous resolution was carried in favour of the upper site, the statement is hardly correct. The resolution certainly was carried, but not unanimously by any means. The meeting consisted of, I think, either fourteen or fifteen persons, all residents on one side of the river, and of these at least bis, including 1 the chairman of the meeting and a majority of the District Board, were opposed to the resolution, while of the remainder, two stated only a week or two previously that they thought the bridge ought to be on the cheapest site, so that I think it may fairly be considered, even at that meeting opinion was eveuly divided. Since then another Board has been elected, and, though the personnel has been partly changed, btill there is a majority who think the lower site ought to be adopted. I could say a good deal as to the issue which was placed before that mreting, and which I think was not exactly propeily represented, but I have already encroached too much on your space, and will only add that I am quite prepared to di^cu^ the question with any one, on the simple basis o£ wliat is best for the general public on all grounds; and while I am quite ope.i to conviction by arguments, based 6n reason and the common good, until those arguments aie forthcoming, I must maintain my present opiniou that the proposed change from the lower to the upper site involves a heavy Wdste of public money at preoent, and an Increased local expenditure hereafter — X am, &c, Edwaed G-. McMinn.
