THE LATEST. Colonel Carrington's Position Strengthened.
Capk Town, January 4. News has been received from Basutoland that a patrolling force of the Cape Rifles, under Colonel Carrington, safely returned to camp at Mafeting, after having come up with a convoy of provisions and armw, ammunition which had been despatched from head-quarters for the use of tho garrison. The arrival of the convoy materially strengthened Colonel Carrington's position. Further news Rhows that the recent defeats of the Busutos' pondomies and tambookies by Colonial troops have had a good effect on other tribes of Tembus, who had aho joined the rebellion, but who are now yielding in large numbers, the tribes having recently submitted to the Cape forces operating against them.
An Alleged Fenian Raid. Londojt, January 1. Owing to a rumour of an intended Fenian raid on tho armouries of Volunteer corps in England, tho authorities at the War Office have ordered precautions to betaken at head-quarters of the various corpx, with a view to preveut tho success of any attnok on the armouries Rumours have found general currency here that torprrlos have been found placed under tho boards of Hor Majesty's *hip Lord Warden, which is lying m the Frith of Forth, on the Kmt Coast of Scotland. Tho nllejred act is attributed to Feniaus. No ofh'cml confirmation of the rumour has been obtained.
