THE GOVERNOR.
In reply to many enquiries as to what previous appointments nave been held by Sir Arthur Gordon, we may state that His Excellency, prior to the annexation by Great Britain of Fiji, was Governor of Mauritius (a Crown colony) and that New Zealand will be the first Dependency posessing representative institutions over which he will have presided. His Excellency belongs to a Whig family, being the fourth son of George, 4th Eai-l of Aberdeen, who was Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs from June 2nd, 1828, to November 2nd, 1830, and again from September 2nd 1841, to July sth, 1846, and constituted First Lord of the Treasury j December 28th, 1852, and resigned February '7th, 1855 ; when he was made a Knight of the Garter, and died December 14th, 1860.
