Basutoland.-Attack on the Colonial Residency at Rerina. Cape Town, November 22.
News has been received that a tribe hitherto friendly twice attacked the Colonial Residency at Rerina in Basutoland, but were repulsed on both occasions.
London, November 22. The rowing match between Laycock and Hanlan is off, on account of Han an declining to pall under six weeks. Alderman M 'Arthur was duly installed Lord Mayor of London yesterday, and the usual banquet was afterwards given in the Guildhall. A large force ef military numbering over 1000 men occupy a position at Ballinrobe. A military encampment has been formed, and all precautions taken as if in enemy's country. A tragic occurrence is reported to have taken place at the Dartmoor Prison, in Devonshire. A serious disturbance took place among the prisoners, and the officials were compelled to fire on the rioters, in order to quell the disturbance. Two of the convicts were shot dead. At a land meeting in Limeriok, a man named Wheeler, agent for a landlord, has been shot dead. No clue has been obtained as yet as to who the murderer is. The relief party of Orangemen, about 80 in number, from Monaghan, has arrived at Baycooth, Lough mask-house, to-day, to assert the landlords in the locality who have expressed their determination to evict tenents who refuse to pay their rents. They reached Ballenrobe unmolested. A force of 7,000, military and police, including artillery were sent for yesterday, and are now at Ballenrobe and Clare Morristown, county of Mayo. Earl Kenmare, an Irish nobleman, has received threatening letters. Goldenberg, a Nihilist, and assassin of General Krapitone, turned approver before he committed suicide, and revealed the whole system of plots to murder the Emperor of Russia.
