TE AWAMUTU.

TiiK performance of the Coraus Dramatic Club on Tuesday night was the greatest treat of the sort that Te Awamutu has ever been, favored with. The part of "Jeremy Crow" in the first piece — 1 Mcif'n Diversiou " — was moat admirably sustained by Mr Swarbrick. The 1 noting of Mr S. E. G-. Bmith was excellent, but he was really not sufficiently vulgar for the, character of Jasper Pidgeon The role of Sir •" Hashley Mutton," as sustained by Mr Tonks, was in itself a study. Mr Wood was fairly good in '• Brother Koland," while Mr Field's " Lawyer Eytem " was very realistic and perfect. I understand that this gentleman took the character at a very short notice. The ladies parts of " Meg, "" Cornelia, " and "Widow Net well" were so admirably performed that it is difficult to believe that the fair debutantes were not professional artistes. In the second piece the characters were equally well sustained. The inhabitants of this district are looking forward to the approaching halfyearly drill of the Troop, which will commence on Friday, the 19th. If we look only half as well in our new helmets as do our confrere* of the Hamilton contingent, I think we shall not be found fault with on the score of appearance. The first Church parade at Te Awamutu will be held at St. John's Church on Sunday next, the 21st inst. The Troop will then attend Divine service, and will be accompanied thither by the band of the regiment A movement is on foot, whereby it is hoped to induce the re-eulistment of several old aud valued members of the Troop, who, from various causes, have left the Force during the last few years. The time is drawiug near when we shall really have to ascertain who are Volunteers and who are not. There is no doubt but that the Waikato Cavalry is » service totally distinct from the rest of the Auckland Volunteers, and should, I think, have special advantages afforded them. We are essentially an armed body on whom the defence of the frontier will, in case of attack, certainly devolve, When the fact is considered that for the cost of maintenance of every constable of the A.C. Force, bven without his horse, no less than twenty-four members of the Te Awamutu Cavalry, with hones, could be kept in a state of efficiency, it would appear, to say the least of it, an unwise act of ths " powers that be " to dispense with our services. If money is an object to this ftovernraeut, as it seems to be, (it certainly was not to some of their predecessors) perhaps they might be persuaded to give the cavalry-men " scrip " as of yore. This would cost no "cash" and " many a chap that I know well" would be immensely proud of having earned a little bit of land for military services rendered. Te Awamutu is by no means at a stand still. This may bo instanced from the fact tfiat while a short time ago we had here but one "gentleman of the black robe, " au eminent legal firm in Waikato have now opened an agency, and I hear th.it another firm from Auckland will shortly rival the " agency" as soon as they can secure the services of "Tommy the Clock," who is at present other wise engaged. — (Own Correspondent.
