SPORTING. The V.R.C. Spring Meeting. (By Cable.) Melbourne, Saturday.

The first day's racing in connection with the above Club commenced to-day on the Memington Racecourse. During the early part ot the morning the Weather was fine, but towards the afternoon the rain fell at intervals. There was an immense attendance, and the greatest interest was manifested in the different events. The racing resulted in some close finishes, and in-, the Maribyrnong Plate Welcome Jack and L ivinia ran a dead heat — the owners dividing the stakes. The following were the results: —

MELBOURNE STAKES. Hon. J. White's bh Chester 1 Mr. J. Wilson's b c Respite , 2 Mr. W. Johnson's br h Monarque ..' 3 After a splendid race, Chester won by a head from Respite.

HOTHAM HANDICAP. Mr. J. Morrisons br h Wellington ... 1 Mr J. Whitting-ham's b m Pivttle 2 Hon. J. White's b h The Pontiff ..'. 3 This was a grand rnce and was only won by a neck. Time, 2 mm. 53 sec. Camballo ran fifth

The race was a very fast one throughout, but the finish in the last half-mile was entirely between Grand Flaneur and Progress, and they made a grand «*trncr?le alonff the straight, but the A.J.C.
