TE AWAMUTU. [Before T. Gresham, Esq., J.P.]
A Heavy Sentence.— John Smith, alias "Tommy the Olock,"alias Thomas Evans, a well-known character m the Waikato, was brought up this afternoon, on remand, charged with a breach of the Vagrant Act, and also upon a charge of drunkenness- The latter charge was withdrawn. With regard to the more serious otFence, it appeared from the evidence of John Bayliss, and of the man-cook employed at Finch's Hotel, Alexandra, that the prisoner on the afternoon of the 18th inst., had rushed into the bar of the hotel in a state of semi-nudity, and had wantonly exposed his person. In answer to the Bench, the witnesses expressed their opinion that there was no accidental derangement of the prisoner's dress, but that the exposure was intentional. Prisoner did not deny the charge, but stated that he was at the time in " the horrors " from drink. Constable Gillies proved several former convictions varying from 9 months to 48 hours. Sentenced to imprisonment in Mount Eden gaol for one year and nine months with hard labour.
