Jones \\ished to know how the work was to bo measured ': Cr. Price said that was an easy matter. He moved that the work be proceeded with by Mcshis Livingstone and Booth. Cr. Knox thought they were getting themselves into a nice little mess, They could not commence this work without nmshmy it. Jf tho Council were determined to buy the land, let them do it against tho express wi&h of the burgesses. Cr. Jones said they could not be tcx> careful how they went to work. The letter from the Undersecretary expre^sly stated tbat the work was" to bo done under the supervision of an engineer. Cr. McGarrigle thought they could gel, the services of the Resident Engineer, but he could not bee the use of exercising &uch undue haste. After ,sorae further discussion, Cr. Hill said he thought it would bo better if it could bo done for the money in the bands of the Government, to carry two timber spans over the present approach. This would ensure greater durability. Several Councillors spoke in favor of an eai(,h cmbjnkmcnt. The Mayor moved, " That before takiirgany steps to carry out the above resolutim, the Government be applied to for the services of Mr Beore to carry out the work." Cr. Price seconded this and withdrew his first motion. Cr. Knox moved, "That no steps be taken rr bridge until liexfc meeting, except that the Mayor request the assistance of vho Resident Engineer." Cr. Jones seconded the amendment. On being put to the meeting, tho motion was cart icd, the voting being 1 tho same 1 as in the previous oaso. CV. Knox moved, " Tbat the Mayor bo asked to call a meeting of the ratepayers tq f\ooi(so whether the works should bo carried out until Noddou's claim had beciy settled." The Mayor, however, refused to accept such a motion, it bfiing-, ho said, ultra iucb. They were there as delegates of

the ratepayers, »nd now it was sought to throw their duties on the peot>le who had elected them: " Cr. Knox s4id he would take the usual oourse of getting a meeting together by requisition to the Mayor, and the matter dropped. Mr Cumming wrote to the Council asking them to take «ome nteps to prevent the traffic across Sydney Square. It was agreed to post a notice asking poople not to use the square as a thoroughfare. A circular was read from the Railway Manager asking for suggestions re timetable. The opinion was generally expressedtthat the table suggested by the Pirongia Highway Board was very suitable, but the Council decided not to offer any special suggestions. A letter from Mr J. K. McDonald re the water on his land was referred to the Works Committeo of which Cr Hill was elected temporary chairman. The Mayor wished to know if the Council would appoint a deputation to meet the members for the district co confer with then* on the various matters of interest to the Borough. It was agreed that the deputation consist of the Mayor and Crs Hill and McGarrigle The following accounts were passed for payment: — J. Knox, 4s ; returning officer, £2 2s; N. R Cox, ISs 3d; Government Storekeeper, £2 os ; Daley £12 10s ; coal, 9s ; Peacock £9 18s. An account of Vialou and C». for 6s ll^d was deferred. This was all the business.
