ALEXANDRA.

The new railway time-table appears to have raised a howl of discontent throughout the whole of the Waikato, so it is to be hoped a more suitable one will be adopted. To the Alexandra folks nothing could be worse, as few except those residing in the township can get their mails arriving as they do at times so late as 10 o'clock at night and seldom before 9. The township will eventnally receive great comfort and benefit, thanks to Mr Asmuss' love of tree culture. The only trees planted in the town streets that are thriving are those planted by that gentleman at his own expense, and which he took care to protect by the erection of a good wire fence. He is now planting a grove of willow and other trees in the Government paddock on a small rise on which ladies, children and others usually congregate to view our annual sports, football and cricket matches, and such other amusements. Long may he and the trees flourish. The excitement re the alleged Kaniwhantwha goldfield has nearly died out, the specimens produced here not being very encouraging as being of a goldbearing nature. I am informed, but it hardly appears credible, that deer have been seen on more than one occasion on the ranges between Oruhiri and Te Kuiti. One would hardly suppose that any of those turned out in the Lower Waikato could have travelled so far up country without being seen en routr, but my informant stoutly maintains that such is the fact. Quite a number of the Ngatimaniapoto tribe were down here on Saturday, and appeared to be patronising the stores and pubs pretty freely. We have had a new Courthouse built here, and the fact of one of our townsfolk who was victimised with a valueless cheque having been summoned to Hamilton to meet the culprit and have the matter adjudicated there is causing considerable comment. — [Own Correspondent, Sept. 27.]
