THE REPORTED GOLD FIND AT KANIWHANIWHA.

Very extraordinary reports have, within thelast few days, been cirdiiiaied regarding the allegod discovery of a goMfiela at the Kaniwhaniwha, on the west bank of the "W.iipa, between Te llore and Whatawhata. In some parts of the district a rumou'" was current; nn Saturday : to the effect that there were over 200 men on the field. Such, however, in not the case, there being only about 20 or 25 prisons in the locality, and they are to be regarded more in the light of visitors than anything el^e. Mr. Moffi>t, a settler iv the neighbourhood, called at our office yesterday and stated that although he did dhow the small leader in which the «?old i« supposed to be to the Messrs Goodwin, he has not in any way induced people to pome there, being assured that at present the chances of its turning out a profitable field are of the vaguest description, The quartz, so far, has beeu picked up on tho surface, and, with few exception*, its. appearance is not very promising, the htone being of a nature too huugry to be gold-bearing. He had seen boine quartz of a better description, and one piece which he submitted to Mr. Uribble, who is a practical miner and a mine manager of long experience, was hpo'-cn of very highly by that gentlemau. So far, however, there is nothing Mr. Moflitt s.iys te warrant a rush, and people would be consulting their own interests were they to wait until something more definite turns up. We give this information for what it ii worth, but we think that under the circum^Lmce-^ the advice which Mr. Moffitt tenders might, with advantage, be followed.
