The Afghan War. The Attack THE BATTLE AND TOTAL DEFEAT OF THE AFFGHANS.
Capture of 27 guns and the whole of the Enemy's Artillery. Calcutta, September 3. News .has been received from ' Kandahar lhat General Roberta has commerced operations for an attaok on Ayoub Khan's position at Umsajah. JReeonnoitering parties have been sent out from the British camp, and they report that the enemy are entrenched in a position of great strength. General Phayre, with further reinforcements, ia continuing his march from Ahoja without opposition, and will reach Kandahar to-morrow.
Calcutta, September 3. Later intelligence has been received that Gen ral Roberts, with a large force, attacked Ayoub Khan at Umsajah yesterday. A desperate engagement took place, but the enemy were unable to withstand the fierce attack made upon their positions. These were gradually abandoned, and captured by the British,
