TOWN IMPROVEMENTS IN CAMBRIDGE.

The constabulary ate doing good work on the streets in Cambridge. Fort-street has been very much improved within the past few weeks. It has been levelled, and a xuraber of the force are at present busily engaged in laying on gravel. Alpha-street west is also undergoing a change. This street has for years been sadly in want of improvement, and the recent alterations in the level of Victoriastreet rendered it necessary that something should be done at once. Although many of the back streets aro sadly in want of attention, it must be satisfactory to know that the work of improvement is steadily going forward. The uneven surface of the earth cannot be transformed by magic into macadamised roads and flagged side- walks ; but what human endeavors can do is, we think, beinf effected. The Engineer to the Board, Mr Hoskins, is.jusc now taking the levels of that part of Victoria-street between the English Church and the Government paddock, with a view to forming a permanent roadway as well as for the purpose of perfecting the drainage arrangements. The circumstance' of the newly-planted trees being on the present road induces this fctep more directly, but the work ha,s long been regarded as oue of the greatest importance. Atone time it was almost decided to carry the surface water lying on the roads in the upper portion of the township into a huge well which was to have had subterraneous communication with the lagoon, but the scheme now about to be adopted is to our mind much to be preferred. It is al&o intended to form Lake street from Mr. Carters stable to Whitaker Terrace, thus n ffo»ding additional means of access to the Domain. When the Dom in Board shall have planted this portion of their trust it will be a very desirable neighbourhood.
