HAMILTON BOROUGH COUNCIL.
The fortnightly meeting of the Council w.is held on Tuesday pveniusr, when there were pi-psent : His "Worship the Mayor, Crx. D ivis, Mullions, Peat Jones, White, McGainglc, and Vialou. The minutes of the prpvi >us meeting woie read and confirmed, ai.d the outstanding correspondence wers mid and approved. An application was read from Mr T. G. S mdes for leare to take a fow 1 wls of gravel from the pits to lay on the roid near his residence, The request was ao. ceeded t ). A tflegiam -whs read from the Under Secretary, intimating thit he had received authority .to- nay £\33 10s to the Council on account of bridge extra «, but would require certain information in order to satit>fy the auditors. The Town Clerk reported that the information required had been supplied, and the money might be expected at any time. Mr J. Boylan, C.E., wrote in answer to a communication from the Council that his offer to do the engineering work of the Borough for six months for £42 would hold good at any time during the ensuiug summer. The Rev. William Calder wrote to the Mayor, as Chairman of the Public Hall Trustees, regarding the sum of money realised by means of a bazaar in ai 1 of the hall fund, which he said S. Peter's Vestry had, unless the trustees carried out their part of the arrangement, resolved to devote to the erection of a Sundayschool. The Mayor said the trustees had resolved to adjourn the matter until the return of the members for the district. Messrs Jaraea Hume and F. G-audin wrote drawing the attention of the Council to the damage which would be done to their allotments were the Council to take tip tho pipes now lying across the road near the Council Chambers. They pointed out that when the drain was constructed in 1876 by the Town Board they (the writers) had contributed towards the cost. After discussing the matter it was finally resolved that the Town Clerk inform Messrs Hume and Gaudin that they will allow the pipes to remain on condition that they pay the value of the same. Mr Jam°s Calderwnod wrote informing the Council that he had measured tho earth deposited in Mr Vialou's yard, and found it to contain 134 cubic yard*. Or, Jones moved that the Clerk apply to Mr Vialou for the value of the earth at Bid per yard. j
This was seconded by Gr. Mullions. * Cr. MoGarrigle could not refrain from expressing 1 Ms surprise at the amount; of talk which had been indulged in in this matter ; the affair was so paltry. It appeared somewhat strange to him that thoso gentlemen who did not hesitate to vote away £395 of the Borough funds in another direction were just those who made such a fu«-sf u«-s about this small matter. He could not see that the Borough wero losom by tho parth being depo-ited in Mr Vialou's yard ; it must have bsen deposited somewhere. But even supposing that the clay did cost the Council the sum they were about to ask Mr Vialou to pay, that gentleman had rendered services to the Borough far transcending that amount in value. He would move as an amendment, " That considering the many services rendered gratis to the Borough by Cr. Vialou, and as no direct loss had been suffered by the clay being deposited in his yard, it would not bo fair Mid equitable to ask him to pay for it." He might also say that a great fuss had been made about the pipes on Mr "Vialou's place, so much indeed, that he had been lead to believe that a considerable quantity remained there. He had, however, that day, at the request of Mr Vialou, gone over the ground, and he found that all tho pipes had been removed, with the exception of those which actually could not be taken up without disturbing his buildings. The amendment was seconded by Cr. Davis. The Mayor said the whole affair had arisen through Councillors taking upon themselves to exercise powers which they did not posses*. For the amendment there voted, Cre. Davis, McGarriule, and the Mayor; for the motion, Crs. Jove*, Peat, "White, and Mullions The motion was therefore declared parried. Mr J. K. McDonald wrote complaining ♦hat the water from the we-*t bridge approach drained on to his property in Ti-dall-^trpct. — Letter received. Mr '"alderwood wroto onVrinsf his services as engineer for six months for £40. — Letter received. The Town Cltrk re-ul the statement of funds as follows : — General accouut overdraft, -£617 ; special fund account, credit, £38. The following wero appointed a committee to draw up the particulars reararding 1 Seddon's claim to lay before the Attorney -General for his opinion: — The Mayor, Crs. Jones, Vialou, and McGarrigle. The Town Clerk reported that Mr Jap. Coombes had paid the amount of the tolls withheld by him. It wns resolvad to retain the services of the present toll collector for the ensuing month. On the motion of Cr. Vialou, the fol- | lowing were appointed Commissioners to | deal with the special fund account: — Messrs Vialou, McGarrigle, and the Mayor for the time beinir. An amendment by Cr. Peat, tn constitute Mesirs Hume, Laihhley, Le Quesne, and N. 11. Cox commissioners, was lost. This was all the business, and the 1 Co mcil shortly afterwards ro*e.
