TE AW AMUT U. Social Gathering.
The last of the so-called "Social Gatherings " took place under the auspices of the Rev. E. Phillips in the Public Hall ou Tuesday evening last. All the performers did their bost, notably Captain Capel, whose rendering of Lord Lovell — in character — "took" immensely. Miss Wainwright assisted in a charming duet on the pianoforte, entitled " Canary-birds We never hea^d Miss Mandeno (the only lady soloist present) to better advantage. Hitherto this lady has had to play her own accompaniments. On this occasion Mr Bell accompanied her. Mr Benge and Mr Winston© also gave readings, but in spite of these and other attractions, it was but too plain to all those present that the good people of Te Awamutu have had a surfeit of this sort of performance. They also seemed to have saved up their money for the Hart family who visited us last night and who had a fairly good house — about 120. The Harts return on the 25th. At the Social (lathering we heard many complaints that there was no dance to follow. — (Ow> CobbesrONDENT.)
