THOUGHTS. THE RIVAL BOARDS.
I thought— l wis.a .Highwayman* * And mustered on.the flat, ' ' To hear of roads and bridges, And the policy of I thought-i-af Jast years'- battle, At Te Kowhai cqrnqr fought, . . When Byron, fresfr-frbni Auckland A batch of proxies brought. I thought — his game was ended, And an end there was to " prox," Because we got the " Local Act" And used the " ballot box." I thought — I was reporter For the Buster on that day, And went into the hotel To see some "euchre" play. I thought— as well as euchre, They played the game of brag ; And tried to bounce the ratepayers And pot them in a bag I thought— then"common sense" stood up And asked them who could say, ' How it was the Road Board had Two elections on that day. I thought — that Day and Corboy spoke, ''A'ftiJ pledged their solemn word TttrfFisec. _had no authority to jump • The functions of the Board. Ittotfght — no minute could be found To snow that he was right ; Therefore, all Byron's proxies Were useless there that night. I thought — the Chairman ended The oattlo for a -while ; And went down to the polling booth, The time just to beguile. I thought-rthc chair, thus vacant left ' Did the wily Major seiie. And thon ana there elected— For the " Corner"— five trustees. I thought this meeting over, Cornelius made a rado, "The books belong to us, the while ;" " We'll have them now" he said. I thought that Charlie Barton Stood manfully at bay, And letting fly his lengthy right, He faced Cornelius Day. I thought— l saw Pat Corboy, And the Major making love, And Byron wildly shouting out, While he held Pat by the " lug." I thought— it rather lucky That a constable was there, Who took the books and papers In his own especial care. I 'thought— how awful jolly 'Twill be this coming year, Two Boards to work the district, With a hostile engineer. I thought— that Byron's little job Remained just as before, While Day and Dawson took the road Right round by Bycroft's door. I think the end is coming, When the district mtist divide. And leave the " Corner" swimming Against an ebbing tide.
