WAIPA COUNTY COUNCIL.

A meeting of the Council was held at the County Chambers, Ohaupo, on Tuesday. Pre sent : Messrs. H. Buttle (chairman), Hadfield, Aubin, Corboy, Steele, Wainwright, and Germane. AttPi* the usual preliminary business a letter was read from Mr Aubiu, -with reft-rjnee to t'xo lad state of the ferry at Te Eore. Anothe" letter o % i the s irac subject was read from Mr McMinn, containing an offer on behalf of Mr Southpy, to d ) the nec3s?a"y rjpairs for the sum of £14. After dis ussion it was ivsolved to act'pt Mr Southby's offer, the Clerk to send for the necessary wire rope. It was also resolved to purchase the canoe at Te Rore, the property of Mrs Chester, to be used in connection with the punt. Mr Lcgertwood, chairman of the Mangapiko Highway District, waited on the Council with a list of the roads proposed to be closed in that district, and Messrs Harper and Blain attended, to oppose the closing-. Mr Legertwood explained that all the roads proposed to be stopped were perfectly useless, many of them leading to nowhere, and others being of a nature which must ever preclude the prospect (>f construction, even if they should be wanted. Mr Harper complained that the Board had not acted in accordance with the terras of the Act, the resolution to close the roads having been passed at the annual meeting of ratepayers instead of at a special meeting called for the purpose. The County Chairman wild he wa6 satisfied that Mr Harper was wrong, as the determination to close the roads had been arrived at, at a special meeting of ratepayers, held after* the annual meeting. Mr Harper then complained that the Board proposed to close a road through Messrs Bosanko's property, near the Block house on the Puniu, which -was the only means of access to the river near. i Mr Ligertwood said the road did not go to the river, and referred to the map to prove Iris assertion. A reserve, the property of Messrs Bosanko lay between thcr end of the road and the river. Mr Harper said it would be easier to purchase a portion of this reserve to complete the road than to open a road at some future time and pay an additional price for the land. Cr Steele suggested that they should confirm the action of the Board with the exception of that relating to the road to the Piuiiu. He would move to that effect. The motion having been seconded, Cr Germann said he represented the Maugapiko district, and as it was the wish o£ the ratepayers of that district to have the roads mentioned in the list closed, he would move as an amendment, that the action of the Board be confirmed. The amendment on being put to the Council was lost, and the motion was then put and carried. A circular was read from the Secretary of the Patea County Council, asking the co-operation of this Council in petitioning the Government to place the waste lands of the colony in the hands of tha County Council." Cr. Germann moved. "That the Waste Lands Boards as at present constituted are not in a position to administer the waste lands of the colony as well as local boards could and the Council is of opinion that in connection with the system of local self-government the waste lands of the Colony should be handed over to the County Council. A number of accounts having been passed for payment the Couucil rose.
