ALEXANDRA.
At our late Road Board meeting, atf I informed you in my last week's notes, the accounts, which were apparently in inextricable confusion, have since had daylight let in upon them by ths auditor appointed for that purpose (Mr Hugh Kirkwood). It will be satisfactory to the ratepayers to learn that the balance in the hands of the trustees is correct to a fraction. Our respected town constable (Mr McLeod) having been removed to Auckland, our township is now visited once a week by Constable Gillies, from Te Awamutu, to keep ub in order. Mr R. D. Li Duffud, of the firm of Duffus and Dick, one of our most enterprising storekeepers, haa sold his business here, the new establishment at Te Awamutu having proved so sucessful as to require all their attention. Our band still hold their regular evening practices, I hear it is their intention to get up a first-class entertainment shortly in aid of the funds. Major Mair, the District Native Officer, was here on Friday last, and next day proceeded to Puniu to see Rewi. Tawhiao was at Kopua on Saturday last to sco his daughter, who is ill at Hauwai. The natives are all pretty well hard up this year for food. They bring little down for sale but pigs, which are bought and converted into bacon by our local storekeepers. — [Own Correspondent, August 9th.]
