RED DEER IN WAIKATO.
A further consignment of four red deer arrived in Hamilton on Saturday by train, for the Piako. Unfortunately one of the animals was found to be in a dying state on arrival, and had to be killed. The remaining three were taken out to Piako in Messrs. Morrin and Studholmes wagons, and liberated near Mr Ti klepenny's residence. We leai'n that the deer brought up by Mr Fir.h, and liberated on the Wangukawa a couple of years ago, are increasing rapidly. The other day a gentleman saw six on the no th-western slopes of the ranges near the Scotchman's Valley. Many have also been seen on other portions of the range. Lasfc summer several found their way down to Hautapu, and cm now bo seen on the properties of Messrs. Martyn, Morgan,, and Paton, in that district. These are also increasing in numbers, many of the does having young with them. It must be very gratifying to the gentlemen who introduced these animals to find that their efforts have been so successful. The deer which arrived on Saturday are from the Acclimatisation Society Gardens, Auckland.
