BOROUGH COUNCIL.
A spkcial mooting of tlie Ouncil was held on Thursday evening, to consider notices of motion given by Or. Vialou, in reference to the bridge approach. Present: Hi-> Worbhip the Mayor, Cis. Davis, Jones, Me arrigle, Peat Vialou, and White. Cr. Vialou, moved "That resolutions 1 aid 2 of the 23rd July last, re building lefcaining wall at bridge approach, and conferring with an engineer on the subject, be rescinded." After some discussion, in which it was pointed out thdt it would be unwise to carry this resolution, The Mayor moyed as. an amendment " That resolutions Nos. 1 and 2of 23rd July, be not reminded, but that they be not acted upon till replies have been received from Wellington to the telegram 3 sent to the Colonial Secretary on the subject." He pointed out that it had never been intended to carry out the-se resolutions, except under tho direction of a competent engineer, and they did not definitely determine the action of the Borough Council Cr. Me jrarrigle, in seconding the amendment, pointed out that the resolutions w^re carried at a meeting fr^m which Cr. Vialon was absent, although notified to attend. For the amendment there voted the Mayor, Crs. MoG-arrigle, White, and Davis : against, Crs. Jones, Vialou and Peat. The amendment Avas accordingly carried. Cr Vialou moved ' ' That when the Government agreed to give £3000 towards the erection of the Hamilton traffic bridge and approaches, it was upon the conditions, that drawings and specificationsproparcdbytheGoverntnentEn^ine.r, should be adhered to, and that the Dis trict Engineer, Mr Stewart, should supervise thework, with a view to progressive payments and the faithfully carrying out the terms of the said specifications and conditions; and that in consequence of the District Engineer recommeuding the Council to dispense with two of the land spans and substitute an embankment in lieu thereof, together with the faulty construction of the said embankment the Boiough has been put to a very large outlay in contiiually repairing the same, which would not have occurred if the original plan had been adhered to, and the probability of the traffic being entirely stopped if it is not immediately attended to, this Couucil should apply to the Minister of Public Woi ks to bend a competent engineer to report theieon and to prepare the necessary specification for tho completion of the same in a permanent and substantial manner." This was seconned by Cr Jones. The Mayor said he would support the resolution, because it appeared to provide a supplement to the telegrams already sent to the Government on the subject. Nevertheless, he would like to see some alterations made in the wording of it. Cr Vialou objected to any alterations, and after some further discussion the motion was carried unanimously. The Council then rose.
