THE MANGA ONE CREEK BRIDGE.
TO THE EDITOR. Sib, — At the general annual meeting of the Tamahere Road Board there was a discussion regarding the necessity of raising the bridge over the B|auga One Creek at Crawfords Gully, improving the approaches, and lowering the hill on the Tamahere side of the gully. Some of the members of the Board did not seem to think this an urgent matter. List Saturday two ladies drcve over the bridge and narrowly escaped an accident from the. state of the approach to the bridge on the Tamahere side of the gully. On the way back they had to take the horses out of the buggy, lead them over the hole in the approach, and harness them on the far side ; one of the ladies having to pull the buggy over the bridge. Our rates are Is in the £, and it is a little too much to have one of the principal roads of the diatriot in, this state. There are from ten to a dozen ratepayers who hare to use this road to get to Hamilton. With the present gradient on the Tamahere side of the gully, it is only possible to take half loads up the hill. This prevents us using thq railway as much as we should do had we a decent road to Hamilton. Except about three chains the road on the Cambridge side of the gully is fairly passable, but the approaches to the bridge on both sides are too narrow, and have never been properly formed. It is no use filling up with light sand, that washes away with every shower. If . plenty of fascines were used, and some clay mixed witli sand or gravel, and put on the top of the fascines, I .think it would set and form a good sound road. However, it is a pity to do much till the bridge is raised at least 6 feet above its present level. — I am, &c., J A 'Douglas. Bruntwood, near Cambridge, 26th July, 1880.
Uxder the heading "^irfch," the following unique announcement appears in the Oamaru Mall; — "Dunlop — On the 2nd June, at her residence, the wife of Frank Ditnlop of twin daughters. Gossips, please remain at home and make no remarks. " A French physician lias published a pamphlet showing the terrible " effects of smoking on the heart." But we have known more terrible effects to heproduced on the heart in five minutes by a little maiden in a calico dress than by twenty years of steady and untiring devotion to the weed. It is estimated that 9000 miles of new railroad will be constructed in America during 1880.
The new Pure Cash Syitem now b«ing initiated by G. and C. will certainly prove a benefit to the public. It has been a great success in Sydney and Melbourne, and when strictly carried out the customer who buys at an establishment where the goods are marked low to ensure a rapid sale must be a great gainer. G. and C. sell their drapery millinary, and clothing at such prices for cash as gives the buyer the advantages of a shareholder in a co-operative society, without the risk of being called upon to bear a portion of the loss should the year's business prove unsatisfactory. Garlick and Cranwell will aim to retain the confidence which the public have hitherto shown them, and are detirmmed to give the pure cash system a fair trial ; whether they gain or lose the first year. Country buyers on remitting cash with order will be supplied with goods at co-operative prices ; just^ the same as though they made a personal selection. ' Furnishing goods, such as carpets, floor cloths, bedsteads, beading, and general house furniture, the largest portion of which is j turned out at our own factory, will be marked at ' the lowest remunerative prices, and a discount of five per cent, will be allowed to those who pay at | the time of purchase. G. &C. having reahsod I the entire value »f their stock during their late cash sale, the present stock is nkw and chrafly | nouoHT. An inspection is invited.— Garlick and Cranwell, City Hall Furnishing Arcade, Queeni street. Auckland.
