that compensation should be given to Mr S. J. Edmunds for losses sustained during the native disturbances in the Bay of Plenty. Ministers opposed this, as it was only one out of a large nnmber of similar claims. The motion was negatived. The House then went into Committee of Supply. Resolutions were passed granting further imprest of £250,000, and authorising the issue of £20,000 deficiency bills. The Crown Lands and Surveys Departments' estimates were passed with a reduction of £5000, proposed by Mr Rolleston. The Native Department estimates were passed without alteration. After a brief discussion on the Defence estimates, Mr Bryce proposed a reduction of £900 in the Volunteer vote. It was intended to pay all Volunteers a halfyear's capitation ; full capitation only to be paid to corps north of the Waitotara River at the Thames and Waikato, and perhaps at Gisborne : after present halfyear no capitation to be given to other corps. — The discussion is still proceeding.
