Ministers opposed this, as it was only one out of a large nnmber of similar claims. The motion was negatived. The House then went into Committee of Supply. Resolutions were passed granting further imprest of £250,000, and authorising the issue of £20,000 deficiency bills. The Crown Lands and Surveys Departments' estimates were passed with a reduction of £5000, proposed by Mr Rolleston. The Native Department estimates were passed without alteration. After a brief discussion on the Defence estimates, Mr Bryce proposed a reduction of £900 in the Volunteer vote. It was intended to pay all Volunteers a halfyear's capitation ; full capitation only to be paid to corps north of the Waitotara River at the Thames and Waikato, and perhaps at Gisborne : after present halfyear no capitation to be given to other corps. — The discussion is still proceeding.
