The editor of the Star to-day laid a criminal information for libel against fonr proprietors of the Uliristchurch Echo.
A mstixoulshkd Irish Lawyer and member of Parliament was going home late one evening, when he was accosted by a desperate-looking ruffian in one of the suburbs of Dublin, and asked what he was going to stand. ' ' "Well, " he replied, meekly, "I am sorry that I can't give you much my friend, but what I have I will share. Here, " he continued drawing a revolver fiom his pocket, " is a weapon which has six chambers. I will give you three, and—" But here the lawyer found himself alone. A Yaxkkk editor, speaking of poultry, says :—'• Much attention has been paid to the rearing of poultry in the West, and the method now in u&o of hatching chickens I consider far superior to the Egyptian one of hatching them in ovens. It is simply to fill a barrel with eggs, head it up, and bit a hen upon the bung hole."
AX EPITAPH. Mary Ann has not been seen .Since early Monday morning ; She lit the stove with kerosene, And mizzled without warning 1 . A\ old gentleman rcmaiked the other day, as he held a piece of paper in his hand: " Nearly 00 years ago I grazed with wonder on the first gas light I saw in New York, and now I am gazing with wonder at my last gas bill." Thi. new Pine Cash Sjstem now bring initiated by G. and C. will certainly pro\e a benefit to the public. It h.as been a great snetess in Svdne) and Melbourne, and when stri< th tarried out the customer who buys at an establishment where the goods are marked low to ensure a rapid sale must be a great gainer. G. and C. sell their drapery, millinary, and clothing at such prices for cash as gives the buyer the advantages of a shareholder in a co-operative society, without the risk of being called upon to bear a portion of the loss should the year's business prove unsatisfactory. Garlick and Cranwell will aim to retain the confidence which the public have hitherto shown them, and are detirmincd to give the pure cash system a fair trial; whether they gain or lose the first jear. Country buvcrs on remitting cash with order will be supplied with poods at co-operative prices ; just the same as though they made a personal selection. I'urnishing goods, such as carpets, floor cloths, bedste.ids, bedding, and general house turniture, the largest portion of whi( h is turned out at our own factory, will be marked at the lowest remunerative prices, and a discount of five per cent, will be allowed to those who pay at the time of purchase. G. &C. ha\ ing realised the entire \alue of their stock during their late cash sale, the present stock is nkw and cue U'l.y noi'GHr. An inspection is invited. — G\rlick \\d Cramwtll, City Hall Furnishing Arcade, Queen - street, Auckland.
