It was proposed, as a hint to the incoming Board, to test the feelings of the settlers as to the rate. A rate of Is in the L was proposed and seconded, to which there was an amendment of 6d, which latter was carried, Avhen, to my intense astonishment, a ratepayer proposed that the original proposition should be put before the meeting, whick was done and carried, thus leaving the rate i» statu quo. Messrs E. Fitzpatrick, Dickeson,Lang, Butcher, and Davies were elected Trustees ; Messrs Burnett and Kcesing, Auditors ; Messrs Canty and Erickson, Fenceviewers. At a meeting of the Board, held immediately afterwards, Mr E. Fitzpatrick was elected Chairman, and a rate of 9d in the L was struck.— [Own Correspondent.]
There is a priceless sapphire at Berlin it weighs a little more than six ounces, and the jury of the Polytechnic .Society have settled its value at the frightful sum of 64,000,000 marks, or £3,200,000 of English money. Perhaps that enterprising firm of jewellers, the Messrs. Kohn, wonldlike'to buy it. After all, what is three millions?— a mere bagatelle !
