BILLS IN COMMITTEE. The following bills were considered and passed:—lnvercargill Drill-shed Site, Sydenham Borough Council Empowering, and Bluff Harbour Foreshore Leasing Bills.

MONDAY SITTING. Mr George moved "That in future during the session the House sit on Mondays. " Mr Hall acquiesced in the motion, adding *-hat in view of the great amount of work to be got through, the Government were considering the propriety of asking the Honse to sit at noon on Wednesdays. The motion was put and oarried.

THE THAMES LICENSING COMMISSIONERS. Sir George Grey moved, " That a Select Committee be appointed to enquire into and report on the petition of Louis Ehrenfried of the Thames, complaining of the manner in which licenses have been refused to be renewed to certain publichouses in the Thames district, such committee to consist of Messrs. Colbeck, Hurst, Macandrew, McDonald, McLean, Reeves, Whitaker, Wood, and Moss." Mr Hall objected, stating that the Select Committee was unnecessary, and the Public Petitions' Committee was the proper tribunal. Mr Tole said the Petitions Committees had already decided the points in connection with a petition from Christ - church. In these circumstances he thought a different tribunal should be chosen. Mr Stewart said the petition before the House showed the necessity that now existed for provision being made in the new licensing bill, for giving licensees a right ot appeal from the decisions of the licensing Commissioners. Sir W. Fox spoke against the motion, contending that in Scotland a right of appeal was provided for, and was found not to work satisfactorily. Mr Reader Wood supported the motion. On a division, after a long discussion the motion was lost by twenty-seven to thirty-four.
