ECHOES FROM TE A WAMUTU.
The great Orange demonstration dkl not take place here on Monday. The afternoon train did not contain the seventynine loyal Orangemen, nor did any very lar^e number of " true believers " come in from Kihikthi to give them battle ; in fact, the day passed off here without any bloodshed. I am glad to say that the miserable raupo whave, in which uur teacher has hitherto had to exist, is not to be allowed any longer to disgrace our township. It only contained five or six moderately sued roems ; but, as £104 are to be expended upon it, I suppose that when the alterations and improvements are effected, it will be large enough to meet the urgent requirements of the schoolmaster. He [ necessarily needs a house with very many and spacious rooms as he is a single man. This is another instance of the infinite wisdom and discretion of the Board of Education in Auckland. Bravo ! our twain School Commissioners ! Who will say that they cannot work the oracle | properly. No doubt some other district j-chool will shortly be informed that the Board "have no funds at their disposal with which to effect the repairing 1 of broken windows or the roofing of a leakj schoolhouse." The funny part of it all is that the work has fallen into the hands of a builder for whom it was never intended. 1 What a daring man your "Own Correspondent" for Te A.wamutu must be. I see by yours of Thursday that he has actually ventured to publish a report of a meeting of Monday last, although ordered by one of our " local worthies " to refrain from doing so. I am authorised to contradict the rumor which has recently been circulating in Te Awamutu with regard to the cause of Bishop Cowie'B recent visit to the Par* sonage. He has not been requested to remove either or both of our esteemed lay - readers, who will continue to perform the semi-sacerdotal business as usual, in full canonicals. In Hamilton I understand that the lay-readers are content to read the service whilst arrayed in their every day costume. The great excitement of next week will be the concert of the Cavalry Band, on Wednesday next. Kiwr.
